Richmond city council has a full agenda for Monday’s regular 7 p.m. meeting, which includes a report on the city’s sustainability plan, recycling fees and traffic safety improvements around school zones and one specific neighbourhood.
City council will also be voting on a fee increase for yard trimmings from $20 to $25 per cubic yard. In addition, staff is recommending council introduce a fee for upholstered furniture drop-offs at the Richmond Recycling Depot by non-residential properties as costs for processing the materials are increasing.
The report also recommends mercury-containing and electronic thermostats be accepted at the depot for recycling.
On the topic of sustainability and recycling, council will be reviewing the city’s sustainable waste management and recycling programs in preparation for an updated report to the community.
Meanwhile, staff reported they will be consulting with the city’s Traffic Safety Advisory Committee while developing a plan to make sure traffic safety at all Richmond schools is consistent.
The plan includes making sure safety measures are in place for students walking to and from school, reducing vehicle speeds and managing congestion around student pick-up and drop-off areas.
Councillors will also be voting on enforcing a 30km/h speed limit at Barnes and Flury drives. This is in response to a petition from eight residents in the neighbourhood.
Enforcing the speed limit, reads the city report, will improve traffic safety, community wellness and social interactions.
Development Permit Panel (Wednesday, April 27)
On Wednesday, Richmond’s Development Permit Panel will be discussing the permit to alter the exterior of a building and the landscape in preparation for an auto dealership at 10700 Cambie Rd.
Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services (Tuesday, April 26)
Staff is asking city council to endorse a non-farm use application to the Agricultural Land Commission (ALC) to add a food hub, a playground, parking and boardwalks over the bog at the Garden City Lands.
The proposal for constructing an ecology walkway along Sturgeon Bank will also be addressed at the committee meeting. This walkway will be part of the Terra Nova Heritage Precinct Plan.
