The musical water fountain at Aberdeen Centre, which illuminates the mall’s main atrium, had to be turned off this year due to COVID-19.
However, the fountain site has been transformed into a so-called “winter wonderland on a frozen lake,” featuring a 15-feet-tall Christmas tree, lighted sparkling reindeer, and giant gingerbread men.
The exhibition is now 99 per cent completed, said Tiffany Ho, the senior vice president and general manager of Fairchild Developments Ltd., which owns the centre. The only thing left to do is add a topper to the Christmas tree, she noted.
“The mist created by the fountain would stay in the air for an extended period of time. Therefore, we had to shut it down. Although we can’t put up a water show this year, we still brainstormed to come up with new ideas for creating a festive show to cover up the water fountain stage,” said Ho.
It was challenging to set up the stage design since there are many mechanisms and parts installed inside the fountain, noted Ho.
Her team also needed to make multiple trips to move a single heavy decoration onto the stage.
Regardless, Ho feels the effort is worth it.
“We hope this show could spark joy for people amid these difficult times.”
Local school choirs were invited to the mall to bring classic Christmas Carols to the public. However, this was also cancelled. Instead, Ho’s team collected a playlist of Christmas music, which will be played through the mall’s audio system.
Winter Wonderland on Frozen Lake is scheduled to run until early January.
