Don't drink and drive this holiday season: Richmond RCMP

With the holiday season in full swing, Richmond RCMP Road Safety Unit (RSU) is increasing its efforts to combat impaired driving.

On National Impaired Driving Enforcement Day, Saturday, Dec. 7, officers will join communities across the province in conducting joint operations, in conjunction with a month-long CounterAttack campaign, a joint initiative with ICBC.

As part of the province-wide focus on road safety, Richmond RCMP officers will also participate in Light Up the Province, a collaboration with B.C. Highway Patrol to target impaired drivers on highways and major roadways.

Impaired driving remains one of the leading causes of preventable crashes in British Columbia.

According to ICBC, impaired driving contributes to an average of 61 deaths each year in the province.

"Our officers will be out in force throughout December, conducting roadside checks to ensure drivers are sober," said Sgt. Eric Baskette, Richmond RCMP Road Safety Unit.

"Impaired driving is entirely preventable, and we urge everyone to plan ahead—use a designated driver, call a taxi or rideshare or take public transit."

Enforcement during the CounterAttack campaign and Light up the Province initiative will include high-visibility patrols and targeted roadblocks at key locations during peak holiday periods.

Tips for a safe holiday season

To prevent impaired driving:

  • Plan your ride home. Use public transportation, ride-hailing apps or designated drivers.
  • Speak up. If you see someone about to drive impaired, help them find a safe way home.
  • Be vigilant. Report suspected impaired drivers by calling 9-1-1.
