Richmond RCMP caught a driver in February going 170 km/h on Highway 91.

A driver was caught by police going 170 km/h in an 80km/h zone on Highway 91 in late February.

On Feb. 25, Richmond RCMP stopped the speeding driver, impounded the vehicle and charged them with excessive speeding.

This was one of 164 speeding tickets given out to drivers in the city last month.

RCMP also handed out 175 vehicle-related fines, including to drivers with tinted windows and missing licence plates.

Richmond RCMP is reminding drivers they can be fined $109 for having tinted windows on their vehicles.

And a failure to comply with an order to remove them can result in a fine of $598.

Other tickets given out in February include 78 for distracted driving, 24 for impaired driving and 159 tickets for driver’s licence infractions.

RCMP targeted high-collision areas, including Steveston Highway between No. 5 and No. 4 roads and No. 3 Road between Cambie Road and Westminster Highway.

They also gave out 11 violation tickets in a two-hour sting at the Steveston Interchange Project after receiving complaints from construction workers about unsafe driving near the worksite.

Scooter alleged involved in criminal activity

On Feb. 22, RCMP found an unregistered gas scooter with makeshift wiring in a Richmond park.

No one in the vicinity claimed ownership of the scooter, and an investigation revealed the vehicle had allegedly been used in criminal activity in downtown Vancouver.

It was removed from the park and the owner was notified, according to police.

In March, Richmond RCMP is focusing on distracted driving enforcement in partnership with ICBC and B.C.’s Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

A total of 1,378 distracted driving tickets were handed out in Richmond in 2024.
