A free demonstration of the ancient art of falconry and the natural ecology and behaviour of the magnificent birds of prey takes place at Terra Nova Rural Park on Sunday, Aug. 18 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Richmond Raptor Festival is being put on by the Pacific Northwest Raptors, who will perform spectacular flying displays as their handlers share an extensive knowledge of the birds.
Spectators will be able to enjoy an entertaining and educational talk about raptor behaviour and hunting and learn about environmental concerns and conservation.
There will also be many opportunities to meet the birds up close and take photographs between demonstrations.
"The birds are a fascinating bunch, each species has its own amazing set of skills and each individual has its own incredible story and quirky personality," said Robyn Radcliffe, of Pacific Northwest Raptors. "People always want to know why our birds don't fly away - on occasion, they go on adventures to return later - it comes down to them realizing life is easier with us.
"Raptors always want to conserve energy, which means that receiving free meals and health care, and having admiring fans watching them every day, is not too bad."
The popular, free event is hosted by the City of Richmond and sponsored by the Vancouver International Airport Authority and the Richmond Nature Park Society.
Flight demonstrations take place at 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
The Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society (OWL) will present a talk at 12:30 p.m., while John Neville, president of BC Nature, will deliver a presentation on Raptors of Canada at 2:30 p.m.
