Steveston-Richmond East MP Joe Peschisolido dropped half a million dollars of federal government money on Tuesday for South Arm Community Centre’s $2.1 million renovation.

The federal government has chipped in $500,000 towards the $2.1 million renovation of South Arm Community Centre.

Joe Peschisolido, MP for Steveston-Richmond East, made an appearance at the community centre on Tuesday to hand over the cheque as part of the government’s CIP 150 investment program.

The funding will go towards replacement of the roof and mechanical systems in order to improve energy efficiency. The project will also include upgrading the fitness centre, the walls, doors, window and floors.

The City of Richmond will contribute $1.15 million to the project, with the South Arm Community Association kicking in a further $500,000. The proposed completion date is this fall.

“A healthy, strong and thriving community depends on sporting facilities, community recreation centres and outdoor spaces to encourage individuals to stay active,” said Peschisolido in a press release.

“The updates to the (community centre) will achieve this goal, and will help to foster an energized community.”

The Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program is part of Canada 150 Celebrates to mark the country’s 150th anniversary of confederation.

“The improvements to South Arm’s fitness centre will help broaden the fitness opportunities offered to the community through the centre, particularly for the residents of Richmond’s southern neighbourhoods,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie, who also attended the event on Tuesday.
