The Lions Manor in Steveston was under construction in 1971 as the old Fentiman farmhouse was being demolished.

This was more than 50 years ago, and the Lions Manor as well is long gone – closed and demolished about nine years ago with residents moved to a hotel on Bridgeport Road.

The province announced early this summer a new eight-storey Lions Manor, a long-term care facility, will be built, for $177 million. It will have 144 beds, 14 hospice beds, respite care and a 37-space child-care centre.

It is expected to be built by 2028 and will be operated by Vancouver Coastal Health.

The Fentiman farm, with a farmhouse from the turn of the century, was later subdivided. The northern portion is now home to the Steveston Buddhist Temple.

The part where the Fentiman house stood – with its own gas well for heating and cooking – is where Steveston Park is now located.

The photo of the farmhouse being demolished and Lions Manor being built was posted on the Richmond Friends of the Archives’ Facebook page.
