Three major outages affected Richmond residents and businesses in Capstan within a week.

Richmond residents and business owners experienced three major power outages in the Capstan neighbourhood within a week.

This has caused a lot of frustration for those in the area, with some saying it has affected their daily lives.

On July 10, an outage affected 2,953 BC Hydro customers west of Patterson Road, north of McKim Way, east of River Drive and south of Charles Street, lasting about two hours.

Another power outage on the same day affected 1,628 customers. This was east of Carscallen Road, north of Capstan Way, south of Sea Island Way and west of Garden City Road.

Less than a week later, an outage lasting four hours affected 2,953 BC Hydro customers again. Those affected were in the area east of Sea Island Way, west of Bridgeport Road, south of River Road and north of Vanguard Road.

There were several outage areas that overlapped.

BC Hydro listed the cause of outages as "other" or "under investigation" on their website.

Susie Rieder, spokesperson for BC Hydro told the Richmond News the two incidents on July 10 were caused by a fault -- meaning the current in the circuit was interrupted.

"This can happen for a few reasons, including equipment failure, or environmental factors such as wildlife coming into contact with equipment," said Rieder, adding the crew could not "determine with certainty what caused the fault" when they arrived at the scene.

Meanwhile, the outage on July 16 was due to a transformer outage, which is often caused by a problem with the equipment.

While BC Hydro understands outages are inconvenient, said Rieder, the company works to "restore power as quickly as possible."

"We are constantly making upgrades to our infrastructure to improve reliability,"she said.

"There is no known larger issue, but we encourage residents to report any information they may have on the cause of an outage to 1-800-BCHYDRO."
