It may be Valentine’s Day, but Richmond motorists were not feeling the love at the pumps on Monday, with many local gas prices hitting an all-time high.
On Feb. 14, several gas outlets across Richmond reached 180.9 cents a litre – smashing the previous high of 176 cents - and the rising prices are expected to continue.
According to GasBuddy, drivers could find the lowest gasoline prices in town at Petro Canada on 4011 Francis Rd. or Super Save on No. 5 Road, where the price is 175.9 cents a litre.
However, you might probably want to avoid two Chevron outlets in Richmond and Mobil on No. 3 Road, since the price is 180.9 cents a litre.
Meanwhile, a post has been trending on Chinese social media site WeChat with many people asking, “do you remember the gas price when you first moved to Richmond?
Richmondite Fatima Wang said that drivers kept complaining many years ago when the price hit 139.0 cents per litre.
"It’s insane to see the gas prices soaring over the past few years," said Wang.
Another Richmondite, Fanny Liang, said she is tired of complaining because nothing will change.
"Now I am thinking about changing my gasoline car to an electric one," said Liang.
The increased demand in spring, global jump in the price of a barrel of oil and the Ukraine/Russia situation are all contributing to the soaring gas prices, according to GasBuddy's website.
The surge in oil price is also expected to add to inflation woes gripping Canada and the U.S., while benefiting Alberta.
