A GoFundMe for RCMP Const. Shaelyn Yang’s family has raised almost double the fundraising goal amount of $50,000.
As of Thursday morning, the fundraising total for the family of the Burnaby RCMP officer, who lived in Richmond, had surpassed $98,000.
Yang was stabbed and died on Oct. 18 after attending a homeless campsite in a park in Burnaby, accompanied by a Burnaby parks employee, where Jongwon Ham was living in a tent.
Messages have been pouring in on the GoFundMe page, and donations are coming from individual police officers, police services as well as other organizations.
One message reads, “Thank you for your bravery and support for mental health. Gone but never forgotten.”
Another message, from Burnaby ACT, an outreach team, said Yang “brought so much light to the world and was an inspiration to all those around her.”
A regimental funeral was held on Wednesday for Yang at the Richmond Olympic Oval, attended by thousands of emergency responders and dignitaries.
It was proceeded by a regimental procession.
A private funeral was held on Sunday afternoon, where about 300 people gathered to remember the fallen RCMP officer.
Ham is facing a first-degree murder charge and was in Vancouver provincial court on the morning the regimental funeral was taking place.
Ham, 37, appeared briefly by video, but his case was adjourned to Nov. 16.
It was the second court appearance for Ham, who has been in custody since his arrest on Oct. 18.
