The battle against the Himalayan blackberry bushes in Richmond’s Terra Nova Park continues throughout April.

To celebrate the City of Richmond’s Earth Week 2021, Green Teams of Canada, a charity which promotes environmental stewardship through hands-on activities, partnered with the city on April 17 to remove the invasive species from one of Richmond’s hot spots.

Many Richmondites got out into nature to learn about the increasing threat of invasive species and how they can take action, according to the Green Team’s program manager Ashton Kerr.

“The Himalayan blackberry didn’t stand a chance against these volunteers, who persisted and removed dozens of root crowns to prevent regrowth. It was rewarding to come back to this site after our activity in November 2020 to continue our collaborative restoration efforts,” said Kerr in a media release.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, specific safety protocols have been implemented and the activity has also been divided into three sessions with only nine people allowed in each session.

Volunteers from Green Teams Canada will return to Terra Nova Park again this Saturday, April 24. People who are interested in attending are required to register first.
