Half of Richmond News readers think transit fares should go up

A poll was conducted by the News in light of fact there is a looming $580 million transit deficit.

About half of Richmond News readers polled think transit fares should go up to balance TransLink finances. 

This was in light of news that TransLink is looking at a $580 million deficit and needs to figure out whether to cut services. 

The News polled 944 of its readers and asked the question: How should we pay for a looming $580M TransLink deficit?

Almost 48 per cent said transit fares should be increased while 19 per cent suggested cutting transit services.

However, about 15 per cent of those polled thought road taxes could be the solution.

The poll ran from July 25 to Aug. 25, 2024.

Of the 944 votes cast in the poll, we can determine that 329 are from within the community.

The full results are as follows:

Increase property taxes 10.33% local, 9.85% total    
Increase fuel taxes 6.99% local, 8.05% total    
Impose road taxes 18.54% local, 15.04% total    
Raise transit fares 47.11% local, 47.67% total    
Cut transit services 17.02% local, 19.39% total

Results are based on an online study of adult Richmond News readers that are located in Vancouver. The margin of error - which measures sample variability - is +/- 3.18%, 19 times out of 20.
