Environment Canada is warning of potentially damaging winds in coastal areas of Richmond on Monday

Batten down the hatches this afternoon and early evening, as strong winds are being forecast for areas of Richmond close to the water.

Environment Canada is calling for gusts of up to 90 km/h this afternoon, with potentially damaging winds coming off the Strait of Georgia.

The wind is expected to come from the northwest and a “combination of a strong pressure gradient and an unstable airmass will bring gusty northwesterly winds to the B.C. south coast,” said EC’s special weather statement.

“Peak winds are expected late afternoon and into the evening hours. Winds will ease tonight.

“Damage to buildings, such as to roof shingles and windows, may occur. Loose objects may be tossed by the wind and cause injury or damage. High winds may result in power outages and fallen tree branches.”

Once the winds ease tonight, Richmond will enjoy a couple of sunny and cold days, with Tuesday and Wednesday set for clear skies, with temperatures ranging from 3 degrees Celsius to -1 overnight.
