Drivers travelling along Highway 99 in Richmond this weekend should expect detours and delays starting Friday.

For Steveston Interchange construction, northbound and southbound Highway 99 traffic will be closed for two consecutive nights.

Motorists driving on the highway will be detoured using the on- and off-ramps at Steveston Highway from June 14 to 16 between 11 p.m. and 4:30 a.m.

The closure is needed so cranes can lift concrete girders into place for the new five-lane Steveston Interchange, according to the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure in a media statement.

There will be 21 girders needed for this construction with the largest one weighing 50 tonnes and up to 35 metres long.

Steveston Highway's northbound loop ramp onto Highway 99 will be closed. Vehicles will be detoured to access the north side on-ramp.

East and west traffic on Steveston Highway will continue for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists.

Transit stops will also continue in all directions as well.

A second set of closures will be required to complete the installation of girders later in June with details yet to be released.

The Steveston Interchange Project is on track to be completed in fall 2025.
