The RCMP will begin road closures at 8 a.m. to secure the parade route. Moncton Street will fully re-open at 5 p.m. while sections of Bayview, No.1 Road and Frist Avenue will remain closed until 11 p.m.

The City of Richmond is encouraging people to bike, take a shuttle bus or carpool to the Steveston Salmon Festival and other Canada Day celebrations on July 1 since parking will be “extremely limited.”

A free, day-long celebration of Canada’s birthday will feature a big street party throughout Steveston Village, including rock concerts, street beers, a wild salmon barbecue and fireworks over the Fraser River.

“To best enjoy the celebrations, choose a sustainable method of transport to get to Steveston Village,” said Ted Townsend, the city’s spokesperson.

“If you stroll to the festival on foot, you won’t have to deal with parking and you’ll burn a few extra calories so that you won’t feel guilty about eating that bag of mini-donuts.”

As for bikers, they can store their bikes in one of two locations at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery and Steveston Community Centre. No bike lock will be needed as it will be operated like a coat check.

There will be two shuttle buses in operation, departing from Richmond City Hall to Britannia Shipyard (8:30a.m.-11p.m.) and from Lord Byng Elementary to the Gulf of Georgia Cannery (1:30-5:30p.m.).

Meanwhile, a TransLink bus will take people from Richmond-Brighouse Station to Lord Byng Elementary School (11:30a.m.-11p.m.). Translink will be running a modified bus schedule for the day and more details can be found on their website.

Festival goers, Steveston residents and merchants are also reminded that there will be a number of road closures throughout Steveston Village on July 1.

The RCMP will begin road closures at 8 a.m. to secure the parade route. Certain roads will re-open once the parade, starting at 10 a.m., clears. Moncton Street will fully re-open at 5 p.m. while sections of Bayview, No.1 Road and Frist Avenue will remain closed until 11 p.m.
