Letters: Shut down ‘birthing factories’ in Richmond

A Richmond News reader is none too happy that people from abroad are choosing Canada to give birth then leave the country

The controversial practise has been a hot topic in Richmond and B.C. for many years

Dear Editor,

Re: “Birth tourism lawsuit defendant denies offering medical help,” News, June 1.

I am sick and tired of these birthing factories that have sprung up in Richmond.

What really rankles me is that folks from other parts of the world are trying to jump the queue to become citizens of Canada without any responsibility whatsoever.

Your recent article about Pen Chen has left me totally cold.

As far as I’m concerned, any non-Canadian kid that was hatched in Canada, should not automatically be granted Canadian citizenship for a minimum of two years of actually living in our country.

Sorry, but we have too many people who take advantage of our liberal immigration policy.

Furthermore, anyone who goes through these birthing farms should be advised from day one that any medical expenses, and/or complication costs, will be the responsibility of the parents.

In fact, a half-million dollar deposit should do it, so we’re not all on the hook.
