The railway crossing at the intersection of Williams and Shell roads will get traffic lights and gates to warn traffic of on-coming trains.

Currently, the intersection is controlled by stop signs and amber flashing lights for pedestrians. Bells and flashing lights signal any trains coming to the intersection.

Funding from the federal government will be combined with City of Richmond funds to add the safety improvements.

Construction is set to begin in early 2021 and be finished in early 2022.

The site is in an environmentally sensitive area and riparian management zone. An environmental permit will be needed to mitigate any impact to this area during construction.

The project will cost about $700,000 and, with $527,000 from Transport Canada, the city’s portion will be $152,800.

The city had originally budgeted for the full amount of the capital project.
