A life-size, well-known childhood game has been set up ahead of Lunar Near Year at a Richmond mall.
Lansdowne Centre has a 10-by-10-metre snakes and ladders game, made of vinyl sheets, and a giant die to ring in the Year of the Snake.
Families, friends and groups of up to four people per team are invited to face off against each other to win bragging rights until Feb. 12.
There will be themed prizes for winners only on Feb. 1.
Teams will be colour-coded with traditional Chinese costumes and take turns throwing the die to get to the end of the board game.
The board, set up in the Atrium next to the food court, took at least four hours to be installed with tiles organized in the shape of the number 25 symbolizing the year 2025, explained Bronwyn Bailey, marketing manager of Lansdowne Centre.
"We made sure there are 28 tiles -- which means prosperity in Cantonese," said Bailey.
Aside from the snakes and ladders, lucky symbols such as red packets, Chinese coins, firecrackers and Chinese knots decorate the board.
"It's certainly a talking piece sharing the culture and the language with all communities and those who are interested to learn and share," Bailey said.
To play, participants are encouraged to make a minimum donation of $10 to benefit the VGH and UBC Hospital Foundation. Proceeds will be used for specialized adult care and research, to reduce wait times and improve health care in B.C.
The Richmond mall has supported the VGH and UBC Hospital Foundation through previous events as it is a regional hospital focusing on complex issues for B.C. residents, Bailey added.
