Lyft drivers to ‘self-certify’ before hitting the road

With more and more services reopening to the public, a big question is what residents are comfortable using during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Restaurants can space out tables, but what if you want to hail a ride in a car?

Ride-hailing company Lyft announced its health and safety program aimed at reassuring passengers to use its service.

The focus is on Lyft drivers having to “self-certify” that they will follow the rules set out by the parent company.

“Before using Lyft, every rider and driver will be required to self-certify that they will wear face masks or coverings throughout the ride, are symptom-free, and will follow local health official guidance related to COVID-19,” said a news release.

Specifically, riders and drivers will confirm that:

  • They will wear a face mask or covering.
  • They will not ride or drive with Lyft if they have COVID-19, think they have it, or have related symptoms.
  • They will keep vehicles clean and sanitize their hands frequently.
  • They will leave windows open when possible and avoid recirculated air when possible.
  • Passengers will not ride in the front seat.

Anyone who does not agree to the personal health certification will be unable to request a ride or drive with Lyft, the company said.

“Additionally, Lyft will provide face coverings in Vancouver at no cost to drivers,” said the news release. “Providing face coverings follows Lyft’s previous distribution of sanitizing products and other cleaning supplies. In light of the latest health guidance on face coverings, Lyft has ordered hundreds of thousands of cloth face coverings for drivers and will continue to alert drivers when these supplies are available.”
