Metro Vancouver has issued an Air Quality Advisory for the region because of intermittent high concentrations of fine particulate matter resulting from the barge fire in Surrey. In a news release, the regional district says it has been closely monitoring air quality throughout the region and sporadic elevated levels of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) were measured at air quality monitoring stations starting this morning.
"The wildfire in West Vancouver (Whyte Lake) may contribute to localized smoke concentrations and there continues to be smoke from wildfires burning in California, Oregon and Washington.
The Air Quality Advisory for the Fraser Valley is continued today because of high concentrations of fine particulate matter which is due to wildfire smoke from fires burning in Agassiz (High Creek) and east of Manning Park. The barge fire in Surrey may also contribute to smoke concentrations.
Metro Vancouver has ended the ground-level ozone Air Quality Advisory for eastern parts of Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley that has been in effect since August 8, 2018. Ground-level ozone concentrations have improved due to cooler temperatures."
