Model aircraft enthusiasts must now use their devices only at Manoah Steves Park in Richmond, as of July 27, 2015. Any Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) that does not require line of sight is banned in all city parks.

Manoah Steves Park is now designated as a model aircraft park while Garry Point Park is now designated for recreational power kite enthusiasts holding a permit.

Council approved the designations on Monday following a round of public consultation with model aircraft users.

In March the parks department initiated a citywide ban of model aircrafts and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), or personal drones, in city parks.

Model aircraft users must now comply with the Richmond RC Flyers Club Code of Conduct.

The city continues to ban UAVs, as they can be operated beyond the line of sight.

The city stated there were safety concerns associated with such aircraft use. The city noted Transport Canada guidelines state that UAVs should not be flown within nine kilometres of an airport.
