More than $16,000 has been raised for cancer research in memory of a Richmond woman, Elisa Lok, who fought cancer starting in 2011, but who recently passed away.

The fundraiser was set up in Lok’s memory and the money raised will go to the BC Cancer Foundation for research as well as to support people undergoing cancer treatment.

Lok was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2011 at which time she had successful surgery. But five years later, the cancer came back and spread to her lungs.

In 2016, she was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer.

With more than 200 rounds of chemotherapy, 30 rounds of radiation and several surgeries, she lived for eight more years.

“Elisa was a warrior! She fought so hard, right to the end,” reads the fundraising page.

“Elisa wouldn't have been able to extend her life for so long in stage 4 if she didn't have the amazing help of BC Cancer Agency, amazing onocologists and other doctors/nurses who treated her so well.”

Family friend Balwant Sanghera praised the doctors, nurses and other health-care professionals at Richmond Hospital and the BC Cancer Agency.

“All of them worked very hard to make sure that Elisa got the best quality of care… It enabled her to spend more time with her parents, husband, children, family and friends,” Sanghera explained.
