Coming up this weekend in Richmond, dart players will compete in Canada’s largest open tournament, the Vancouver Open.
From Friday through Sunday, competitors from across Canada, U.S. and even England will participant in blind draw doubles, mixed doubles, ladies’ doubles, men’s doubles, mixed triples and singles tournaments.
“It’s just a wonderful tournament to come out and play,” Suzie Letrud, president of the Vancouver Dart Association told Richmond News. “I don’t know anything but goodness to say about this tournament. We get great feedback from everybody who has played in this tournament.”
The annual, world-ranked tournament has a prize purse of more than $15,000 and anyone is welcome to participate, regardless of skill level. Pre-registration is not required.
“We have high ranking people from the States coming in, from England coming in, from all of Canada. They’re high ranking players,” Letrud said.
“You don’t need to be a pro to come out and play,” she added.
While these top competitors will participate, Letrud said even competitors as young as 12-years-old can now compete, as the National Darts Federation of Canada’s standards has lowered the minimum age for participation.
“You wouldn’t believe, some of them are beating the adults that’s for sure,” Letrud said of the younger competitors, adding that many of the younger dart players often have great sportsmanship.
Competitions begin Friday evening at 8 p.m. at Sheraton Vancouver Airport Hotel. For more information, visit Vancouver Dart Association’s website.
