The Steveston Hotel needs a new roof.
The building that houses a hotel, café and the Buck & Ear has applied for a heritage alteration permit and for a grant from the city to help pay for the renovations. It is one of 17 buildings in Steveston identified as a protected heritage resource.
The city has about $1 million in grants to help preserve heritage buildings in Steveston, the Steveston Village Heritage Conservation Grant Program the application is for $72,800 to help pay for the roof work.
Heritage conservation grants cannot be more than 50 per cent of the total costs of the project, unless the site is owned by a registered non-profit society.
The roof being replaced on the hotel is a flat roof, considered a “character-defining element” of the building as identified in a “statement of significance.”
The project is to replace the roof and repair damage caused by leaks into the building.
The hotel – previously known as the Sockeye Hotel – was built in 1894. After the fire in Steveston of 1918, it was used as a refuge for those without homes and a temporary post office.
The hotel is managed by the Joseph Richards Group and the application for the renovations is by Kanaris Demetre Lazos, a construction company. The building owner is registered as “525 W Georgia Street Ltd.”
