New Steveston overpass reaches midway milestone

The five-lane overpass in south Richmond should be fully completed by the fall.

Half of the new Steveston overpass will open to traffic this week.

The north half of the new Steveston overpass is ready for cars and westbound traffic will start rolling along it on Thursday.

A week later, eastbound traffic will be directed onto the new overpass, so that the demolition and reconstruction of the south half can begin.

The south side of the overpass is expected to be completed in the fall.

Following the eastbound traffic switch in about a week, the northbound loop ramp will be closed until about mid-September with a two-lane left turn signal onto the northside ramp detour will be in place.

Access for pedestrians will be maintained on the north side of the new structure.

The crosswalk on the northwest side of the overpass will be closed with pedestrians directed to the sidewalk on the south side.

Similar to the existing traffic pattern, cyclists will have the option to dismount and use the sidewalk to cross Highway 99 or use the roadway.

The five-lane Steveston overpass rebuild is part of the George Massey Tunnel replacement project.
