Rumble Boxing is opening a location in Richmond after city council changed its bylaws to accommodate it.
The city had a covenant that restricted indoor recreational facilities near the Richmond Olympic Oval.
But Landa Global Properties, which wanted the boxing gym to open on the ground floor of its Cascade City development at Gilbert Road and Elmbridge Way, asked city council earlier this year to remove this restriction.
The covenant dated back to 2015 when the Oval’s chief executive officer asked for restrictions on indoor recreation businesses in new developments near the facility “to protect the City’s investment in the Richmond Olympic Oval,” explained a report to city council.
After receiving the application, the city consulted with the Oval who informed them they no longer feel restrictions are necessary on indoor recreation facilities since the Oval is now a “well-established business in the neighbourhood.”
The decision from city council was unanimous to remove the covenant and the Richmond location is expected to open in August.
This is the ninth location of Rumble Boxing, which calls its offerings a fusion of “nightclub meets fightclub” with a “a focus on high-energy boxing workouts, personal training and community engagement.”
"We are excited to introduce Rumble's dynamic workouts and vibrant atmosphere to the residents of Richmond," said Cissy Chen, founder and CEO of Rumble Boxing.
"Our expansion represents our commitment to fostering active lifestyles and creating memorable fitness experiences and we are grateful to the City of Richmond for working with us to make it happen."
