Striking workers at Richmond’s Radisson Blu Vancouver Airport Hotel, formerly Pacific Gateway Hotel, were allegedly injured in a motor vehicle incident on Wednesday.

One person was sent to the hospital following an incident involving a shuttle van and two other vehicles at the Radisson Blu Vancouver Airport Hotel in Richmond.

In a media release issued June 20, UNITE HERE Local 40 said an Ace Charters Vancouver shuttle van had allegedly "lurched suddenly through the bushes behind the hotel, crashed into a second vehicle, and careened across Lysander Lane until it hit a third car parked at a nearby charging station."

The union represents striking workers who walked off the job at the Radisson Blu three years ago after the hotel terminated 143 long-term staff.

Two striking hotel room attendants were injured while avoiding the vehicles, added UNITE HERE Local 40.

"We heard a loud noise and saw a car coming from the bushes. We ran as fast as we could.  A big black car came toward me, and the tire hit my ankle. It was so scary, we didn’t know what to do," said Vent Reddy, one of the striking employees, in the media release.

Richmond RCMP attended the scene shortly after 2 p.m. and were told by the driver of the black Ford van that he stepped on the gas and struck a black Ford Edge while attempting to park on the street, Richmond RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Adriana O'Malley told the Richmond News.

"The collision resulted in the Black Ford Edge being dragged across the street into a parking lot where a third vehicle was struck," she said, adding two pedestrians on a nearby sidewalk jumped out of the way to avoid being hit and "sustained minor injuries."

All three vehicles were towed and the two witnesses corroborated the driver's version of events.

Brian Twaites, paramedic public information officer, confirmed that BCEHS received a call at 1:58 p.m. on June 19 about a motor vehicle incident in the area.

"An ambulance with primary care paramedics responded to the scene. Paramedics provided emergency medical treatment to one patient who was transported to hospital," he added.
