An accident involving a motorcyclist and truck sent one to hospital.

An east Richmond motorcycle accident sent one person to the hospital on Tuesday evening.

BC Emergency Health Services responded to a motor vehicle incident involving a motorcycle travelling eastbound and a truck with a load travelling westbound on Westminster Highway at Smith Crescent around 6 p.m. on Sept. 10.

Two ambulances with advanced care and primary care paramedics, Richmond RCMP and Richmond Fire-Rescue attended the scene.

Grant Wyenberg, assistant deputy chief of Richmond Fire-Rescue, said the crew arrived on the scene to find the roll-off container had separated from the truck in the opposite lane it was travelling on.

"The motorcyclist had struck the container and suffered some serious injuries and was taken to hospital," said Wyenberg.

Paramedic information public officer Brian Twaites confirmed with the Richmond News paramedics provided emergency medical treatment to "one patient" before they were taken to the hospital.

A Hamilton resident was two cars behind the motorcyclist when she witnessed the accident.

She told the News the chain holding the truck's trailer had come off as she watched the trailer flip over and onto the road.

Multiple Richmond community members checked on the motorcyclist, who was conscious, and "did their best to help," she added.

"The motorcyclist was conscious and everyone on-site did their best to help. The scariest part was seeing the truck speeding around the bend and the trailer coming off, which looked like (it) was going to catch fire and explore," said the Richmond resident.

Richmond RCMP is investigating the incident and is asking anyone with information regarding this collision or with dash cam footage to call Richmond RCMP at 604-2781212 and quote file number 2024-28836.

Hamilton residents have been relentlessly asking for more speed control and a restriction on large trucks travelling through the neighbourhood.

In February, the City of Richmond discussed reducing the speed to 30km/h for the small roads in the east Richmond neighbourhood.

ICBC crash data for the past five years showed a total of 117 incidents recorded in the neighbourhood with 82 per cent of these incidents taking place along Westminster Highway.

Speed studies were done at 10 locations within Hamilton -- except on Westminster Highway at Gilley Road, a main intersection.

In particular, a speeding issue was identified on Westminster Highway in front of Cranberry Children's Centre with most vehicles recorded travelling between 65 km/h and 87 km/h, and the highest speed recorded at 150 km/h.
