Out and About: Indigenous culture celebrated at historic Steveston cannery

Storytelling, community art projects and Indigenous music and vendors were part of the lineup this weekend.

This weekend saw a special event at the Cannery in Steveston Village.

The historical building was the site for a celebration of Indigenous cultures and fishing history.

The free admission event took place on Saturday, both in and nearby the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site.

The Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society operates the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site on behalf of Parks Canada.

Beginning in the 1980s, the society has worked in partnership with Parks Canada to preserve the Cannery facility and provide tours and educational programming, site promotion and ongoing maintenance.

Richmondites and other visitors enjoyed an afternoon of Indigenous music and vendors, Coast Salish storytelling, community art projects and workshops, free film screenings and shops.

They also experienced a tour of an authentic — now repurposed — cannery operation.

The special day was supported by the Province of British of Columbia, Parks Canada and the Port of Vancouver.
