A passenger was apprehended at the airport Saturday after allegedly biting and spitting on police officers and was escorted off the plane wearing a “spit hood.”
Just after noon on Jan. 13, Richmond RCMP were called to the Vancouver International Airport (YVR) to “assist with an aggressive passenger” who was on a flight coming into the airport.
RCMP were told that, during the flight, the passenger had allegedly assaulted a fellow traveller.
Based on the person’s behaviour, airline staff determined the passenger “posed a potential safety risk to staff and passengers” and was subsequently restrained, RCMP said.
When the plane landed, Richmond RCMP boarded and, after a long attempt to de-escalate the situation, they ultimately apprehended the individual under the Mental Health Act.
Richmond RCMP explained that, while they were escorting the passenger off the plane, they were “actively resisting” and were allegedly biting and spitting on the police officers.
For the safety of the officers and the public, the spit hood was placed on the passenger as they were escorted out.
