The South Korean musical production of Phantom, starring K-pop sensation Super Junior's Kyuhyun, is coming to Canadian silver screens in September.

SilverCity Riverport in Richmond is one of six B.C. locations where fans can watch the musical. It will also be shown in Vancouver, Burnaby and Coquitlam. The Canadian dates were announced following a series of screenings in the U.S. that are scheduled to conclude in August.

Phantom by Maury Yeston and Arthur Kopit is based on Gaston Leroux's 1910 novel The Phantom of the Opera, which tells the tale of the gifted musical genius Erik with a monstrous face who haunts the Paris Opera House in the late 19th century. His attempts to make young soprano Christine Daaé the new diva of the opera sets in motion a chain of events that lead to the revelation of his past, and ultimately his tragic demise.

The musical premiered in South Korea in 2015, and the screening features the fourth production that ran from March to June of 2021.

Super Junior's Kyuhyun, who plays the title role of the Phantom, is a veteran musical actor with leading roles in productions such as The Three Musketeers, Singing in the Rain, and Werther. He is joined by acclaimed soprano Sunhae Im, who is reprising the role of Christine after performing it in the 2015 premiere and from 2018 to 2019.

The film runs for two hours and 57 minutes and will be in Korean with English subtitles.

Canadian screenings are scheduled for September 22 and 24, with tickets going on sale soon. More information will be announced on the official website.
