Workers at Richmond’s Sheraton Vancouver Airport have been on strike for a full month.
Hundreds gathered at Richmond city centre on Friday afternoon for a mass demonstration led by UNITE HERE Local 40, the union representing Sheraton workers, to mark the one-month anniversary.
A traffic advisory was issued for Minoru Boulevard as workers and their allies marched around the area, calling for living wages and better working conditions.
Workers such as housekeepers, banquet staff, front desk agents and the Sheraton’s Starbucks food services workers had walked off the job on June 14.
Since then, they have been picketing outside the Sheraton and its sister hotels, Hilton Vancouver Airport and Marriott Vancouver Airport, every day between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.
The Sheraton has received three cease and desists from the B.C. Labour Relations Board for using scabs since the strike kicked off, and a public boycott on the Sheraton, Hilton and Marriott was declared by the BC Federation of Labour.
Last week, the Sheraton filed a notice of civil claim at the B.C. Supreme Court against UNITE HERE Local 40 and its members for causing excessive noise and allegedly intimidating workers who crossed the picket line.
