A 10,000-square-foot field house could finally be in the works for Hugh Boyd.

The field house was approved in principle by Richmond city council in 2018 –at which time they increased the proposed size from 6,300 square feet to 10,000 square feet. At that point, the smaller facility was estimated to cost $5.3 million (2018 dollars).

The city will now have to figure out a new budget for the expanded plan.

The field house would be for community and sports groups, but it would also be able to host provincial- and national-level tournaments.

City staff say such projects take three to seven years to materialize, and they plan to start a public engagement in early fall.

A working committee looking into it includes several soccer associations, the West Richmond Community Association, Richmond Sports Council, Hugh Boyd secondary and the Richmond School District.

A report about the proposed field house is on the agenda for city council’s next parks and recreation meeting.
