Poll results: Majority of News readers would spend lottery winnings on family, friends

Richmond News ran a poll asking what people would do if they won $58 million as a Richmond man did in March.

Forty-four per cent of people polled about what they'd do if they won the lottery said they'd help out family and friends.

The second choice was to continue life as before, followed by readers who wanted to travel the world, quit their job and start a charity.

The Richmond News polled 1,516 readers and asked the question: What would you do if you won $58 million?

The News reported in March how a Richmond man had won $58 million and planned to buy a house, travel someplace warm, learn to play the guitar and buy some fishing gear.

The results from the poll are from March 25 to May 10.

Of the 1,516 votes, we can determine that 490 are from within the community. The full results are as follows:

Travel the world 14.49% local, 14.91% total    
Quit my job 9.39% local, 11.61% total    
Start a charity 11.84% local, 9.56% total    
Help my family and friends 43.88% local, 44.20% total

Results are based on an online study of adult Richmond News readers located in the Lower Mainland. The margin of error - which measures sample variability - is +/- 2.51%, 19 times out of 20.
