Updated: Liberals take Steveston-Richmond East, Richmond Centre too close to call

Nationally, the Liberals are poised to secure the most seats in the 2021 federal election, but have fallen short of a majority government.

Liberal candidate Parm Bains has defeated incumbent Conservative Kenny Chiu in Steveston-Richmond East.

As it stands, Bains has garnered 42.8 per cent of the votes while Chiu has managed about 33 per cent as of Tuesday morning.

Over in Richmond Centre, it is a much tighter race, with the Liberals Wilson Miao leading 691 votes over Conservative candidate Alice Wong, who is running for re-election.

As of Tuesday morning, 187 of 188 polls have reported results in Steveston-Richmond East and 184 of 185 polls have reported in Richmond Centre.

In Steveston-Richmond East, Bains has 15,420 votes and Chiu, 12,060 votes. 

Meanwhile, the NDP candidate in that riding, Jack Trovato, has 6,857 votes. The People's Party of Canada candidate (PPC) Jennifer Singh has 925 votes, ahead of Green Party candidate Francoise Raunet's 805 votes. 

In Richmond Centre, Miao has 11,661 votes and Wong, 10,970.

Sandra Nixon, running for the NDP in Richmond Centre, has 5,292 votes, followed by Green Party candidate Laura Gillanders with 971 votes and the PPC candidate James Hinton with 676 votes.

Meanwhile, election officials won't start counting mail-in ballots across the country until Tuesday. Elections Canada has said it expects to finish the mail-in count in most ridings by Wednesday, but some may take another day or two.

So far, the Liberals are leading in 155 ridings across Canada, followed by the Conservatives, leading in 122 ridings.

Meanwhile, the NDP are leading or elected in 26 ridings, and the Greens in two ridings.

The Bloc Quebecois is leading in 33  ridings while the People’s Party of Canada is not leading in any riding.

Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau won his Montreal riding of Papineau, which he has held since 2008, but lost a cabinet minister in Bernadette Jordan after the Liberal-held South Shore-St. Margarets riding in Nova Scotia fell to the Conservatives.

Meanwhile, Conservative leader Erin O'Toole has been re-elected in the Ontario riding of Durham, which he has represented since 2012, while Green Party leader Annamie Paul has lost in the riding of Toronto Centre.

NDP leader Jagmeet Singh is also projected to be re-elected in his riding of Burnaby-South.

Bloc Quebecois leader Yves-Francois Blanchet has been re-elected in the Quebec riding of Beloeil-Chambly.

PPC leader Maxime Bernier has lost his bid to get elected in the Quebec riding of Beauce.
