A popular trail in Richmond will be closed periodically on weekdays from May to June for inspection work.
Trails on the Iona Jetty and along the south pond at Iona Beach Regional Park in northwest Richmond will be closed on Thursday and Friday this week for inspection work.
It will reopen from May 18 to 26, and then closed on weekdays from May 27 to mid-June, according to Metro Vancouver.
“In addition, there will be single lane alternating traffic along Ferguson Road west while work is underway,” said Metro Vancouver in a statement to the Richmond News.
The regional regulator explained that the closure is related to an outfall rehabilitation project that’s part of the ongoing Iona Island Wastewater Treatment Plant projects.
During the trail closure, Metro Vancouver will inspect the outfall pipes under the Iona Jetty Trail, which carry treated wastewater from the Iona Island Wastewater Treatment Plant to the Salish Sea. The inspection work will help with the design of the outfall rehabilitation project.
Built in 1987, the pipes “have shown signs of cracking that require emergency repairs to fix leaks,” according to Metro Vancouver.
The Iona Beach Regional Park will remain open during this period.
Meanwhile, Metro Vancouver is introducing a new weekend shuttle service from Templeton SkyTrain Station to the park from June 15 to Sept. 15
“(It's) to let people be able to enjoy the park including the new picnic area, without worrying about parking,” said Metro Vancouver.
