TransLink is looking for feedback on a proposed temporary bus exchange in Steveston near Garry Point Park.
Currently, five bus routes connect Steveston Village to other parts of Richmond with routes ending along Chatham Street, between First and Fourth avenues.
Two Steveston residents started a petition, which garnered more than 250 signatures, in opposition to this bus loop plan.
The proposed new location for the transit hub will relocate parked buses away from Second Avenue, active bus stops will still be on Second Avenue for passenger drop-off and pickup.
This new configuration would have buses travelling southbound on Seventh Avenue, eastbound on Moncton Street and northbound on Sixth Avenue near Garry Point Park as a turnaround route instead of using the streets north of Chatham.
Residents said the proposed bus loop next to the popular park "is an accident or accidents waiting to happen" as it is a high pedestrian area with a daycare at the corner of the turnaround route.
However, according to TransLink, the proposed bus loop would "reduce bus congestion near a retail district and accommodate local businesses."
New bus shelters and new bus stops would also be added along Chatham Street as part of the plan.
TransLink is also working with the City of Richmond to look for a permanent off-street bus exchange for Steveston.
