Richmond RCMP allege two men tried to steal $7,400 worth of merchandise.

Two men were arrested and charged after allegedly trying to steal $7,400 worth of merchandise at a Richmond store in early April.

On April 4, Richmond RCMP received a report of two men allegedly stuffing retail items into bags.

Two RCMP officers who were on foot patrol nearby went to the scene.

As the two suspects left the store, the officers told them they were under arrest for theft. Both men dropped their bags and tried to flee the area on foot.

Richmond RCMP officers chased the suspects and were able to arrest one of them.

During the arrest, the suspect allegedly produced a baton, but officers were able to arrest him without anyone sustaining injuries.

The second suspect fled the scene.

“We commend the community member whose prompt reporting led to the timely arrest and charges in this case,” said Chief Supt. Dave Chauhan, officer-in-charge of Richmond RCMP.

“These arrests reflect our continued focus on combatting property crime within our community. Our bike and foot patrols provide a visible presence that serves as a deterrent for criminal activity and provide a sense of security for our residents, particularly in our downtown core.”

Richmond RCMP said it encourages businesses and residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity to police promptly, as comprehensive data collection remains crucial to its targeted enforcement strategy.

Taylor Lucas Kolish was charged with theft over $5,000, resisting or wilfully obstructing a peace officer and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

Kolish was released from custody with multiple conditions, including not to attend Richmond Centre.

He is scheduled to appear in Richmond Provincial Court on April 22.

The second suspect was identified as Dicey Thomas Thunderheart Mathias was charged with theft over $5,000 and resisting or wilfully obstructing a peace officer.

A warrant has been issued for his arrest, and anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to contact Richmond RCMP and quote file number 2025-10477.
