Richmond art theatre releasing musical to reconnect the community

Thicket and Thistle's What's Your Wish, a 15-minute stream on demand show, will be released online this month.

The arts and entertainment sectors were among the hardest-hit sectors during the pandemic, but the local arts scene has been flourishing nonetheless, with some artists tapping into their creative juices to fill the void of uncertainty.

Children's Theatre of Richmond, a Richmond-based not-for-profit theatre group, plans to release a short theatre live streaming show this month with hopes to send a timely reminder to community members that art has the power to reconnect everyone and give people strength during these continued difficult times.

Thicket and Thistle's What's Your Wish is a 15-minute stream on demand show about two boys who are sucked into a magical storybook and try to make it out alive, according to Lily Yuan, founder of Children's Theatre of Richmond and producer of the show.

"16-year-old boy Nicholas and his best friend Brian got sucked into the fantastical world of Death Forest and they later learned that the only way to make it out alive is to find the enchantress of the forest. With help from a fairy, they later understand the power of trust and friendships," said Yuan.

"This show has not only created job opportunities for super talented and experienced artists across Metro Vancouver, but also shared messages of hope and resilience. I also hope audiences can feel that they aren't alone or isolated after watching the show.”

Thicket and Thistle's What's Your Wish took Yuan and her dozens of crew members almost half a year to produce, with all scenes being filmed in the Norman Rothstein Theatre.

The stream on demand show will be posted on Children's Theatre of Richmond's website, with people being “encouraged” to pay $3.99 to watch.
