Richmondite author Meena Mann has released her second book of poetry, this time focusing her energy on the human psyche.
Mann’s latest offering, “My Body’s Temple,” is divided into six chapters of thought-provoking poetry, starting at the crown of your head and descending down to your feet.
The Cambie Secondary alumnus said the book starts with “the mind” and delves into “our beliefs and the darkness and fears we tend to hide,” touching on topics of mental health such as depression, anxiety, and suicide.
Lips represent power
Lips, added Mann, discusses “the power and impact of our words,” the heart “examines love and the complexities of romantic relationships.”
Moving down to the womb, Mann said the focus is on motherhood, while “lust explores being physically intimate and vulnerable.”
Lastly, “footsteps” centres on finding your “spiritual path, personal growth, and life's wisdom,” according to Mann.
“Poetry gives words to emotions and life circumstances that people sometimes have trouble expressing, such as mental health issues, loss, heartbreak, motherhood, and self-help journeys,” added Mann, who currently teaches elementary school in Vancouver.
“Poetry can show others that they are not alone in their thoughts, emotions, and obstacles they may be facing.
“We all go through human experiences, but society teaches us to reframe from sharing our struggles, and to present a strong persona to the world.
“I want to break barriers and unmask conversations that are difficult. I want to normalize the trauma’s people face and make them beautiful.”
Mann has been an educator for 12 years and holds a degree in psychology from Simon Fraser University.
