Fun fact about Richmond...
Do you know why "Minoru" is used to name so many places in Richmond?
We have Minoru Park, Minoru Chapel, Minoru Boulevard and the Minoru Centre for Active Living.
No, there was no Mr. or Mrs. Minoru who lived in Richmond in its early days. "Minoru" was actually the name of thoroughbred who won the Epsom Derby in England in 1909. The owner of a new racetrack in Richmond, Samuel Brighouse, named his track after the winning horse - the Minoru Park Race Track.
And the name stuck although the race track is long gone.
Minoru the horse was named after Minoru Eida, one of the sons of a Japanese master gardener who was building a Japanese garden in Ireland, according to the Friends of the Richmond Archives. The landowner, who also bred horses, leased the thoroughbred Minoru to King Edward VII who raced it at the Epsom Derby.
