Fun fact about Richmond...
Do you know the reason behind the Japanese Fishermen's Hospital being built in Richmond?
The Japanese Fishermen's Hospital was the first hospital in Richmond and is considered the birthplace of the "first socialized Medicare system in Canada," according to the Steveston Heritage website.
It was built in response to typhoid fever epidemics, which were yearly occurrences during the last years of the 19th century.
When the hospital opened, there were 30 beds, two private rooms, and a small surgery room.
