Richmond councillors have voted to amend a bylaw to allow themselves to continue attending meetings virtually.
During the provincial state of emergency, municipalities had the option to conduct meetings electronically to ensure social distancing.
Although that state of emergency ended June 30, municipalities have been told by the province they can continue the practice until the end of September. At that time, it’s expected the province will introduce legislation to allow virtual meetings in non-emergency times.
A city staff report recommended councillors amend the council procedure bylaw to ensure they are in line with that anticipated legislation.
The report also notes that additional amendments to the bylaw – which would allow for electronic meetings as well as electronic participation by members of the public – will likely be recommended in the fall after the provincial legislation comes into effect.
Richmond councillors began meeting virtually when the pandemic started in the spring of 2020.
