A Richmond elementary school went into a "hold and secure" pattern on Monday afternoon, two weeks after another security alert at the same school.
“This afternoon, the RCMP initiated a hold and secure - perimeter lockout, in response to a community incident,” reads a letter to parents and guardians of students at Cook elementary.
According to the letter, the incident was not related to the previous security alert earlier this month, which was in response to a stranger danger, and there was no indication “that there is any further threat to the safety of the community.” Richmond RCMP gave an all-clear to resume normal activities at 2 p.m.
Richmond RCMP confirmed with the Richmond News that police responded to a "possible suspicious person" at the school and the hold and secure was initiated as a "precaution."
"Based on the investigation, this incident appears to be unfounded," said Richmond RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Adriana O'Malley.
A parent, who does not wish to be named, told the Richmond News she was concerned about the limited information provided regarding such incidents.
However, David Sadler, Richmond school district spokesperson, said school administrators had shared “all available information related to the hold and secure” in the letter sent to parents and guardians yesterday.
“When communicating about incidents such as hold and secures or other safety measures, it is important to understand that privacy laws must be respected, especially when it comes to minors,” he explained, adding schools must comply with privacy laws when it comes to incidents involving students.
“This means that certain details may not be able to be shared publicly to protect the privacy of those involved.”
Sadler encourages parents to reach out to school administrators with their questions and concerns about the incidents.
“The school district understands the concerns of the school community and wants to ensure that parents feel supported during these situations. School administrators are always available to speak and support parents with their concerns,” he said.
