The Steveston Salmon Festival is getting $72,300 in provincial funding.

Local fairs, festivals and other events in Richmond recently received more than $500,000 in funding from the province.

A total of 22 Richmond events will benefit from the funding, including $142,000 for Javed Akhtar's live show, $82,300 for the 2023 Canada Cup International Wheelchair Rugby Tournament and $72,300 for the Steveston Salmon Festival.

“The Steveston Salmon Festival Committee is very grateful for the funding support. This funding will help us to bring back many favourite events, such as the Parade and the Salmon Bake. We look forward to hosting a fun and safe festival within the Richmond community,” said Alan Sakai, community leader.

The funding comes from the B.C. Fairs, Festivals and Events Fund, which offers one-time grants totalling $30 million to support the recovery of the arts industry.

"Each year, Richmond hosts a wide range of events, festivals and fairs, from the Steveston Dragon Boat Festival to the Salmon Festival," said Kelly Greene, MLA for Richmond-Steveston.

"This funding will help ensure these events continue to provide joy, entertainment and connection for people in Richmond."
