A Richmond farming family is asking council to allow them to subdivide their property and allow the next generation to farm the remaining agricultural land.
An application to sever three acres that includes a four-bedroom, 6,870-square-foot home from the 18-acre parcel in the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) is on council’s agenda for Tuesday’s general-purposes committee meeting.
The plan is for the owner’s children to create a cranberry farm on the property – no building would be permitted on the farm portion of the property.
The owner has lived on the property at 3031 No. 7 Rd. since 1988 when the house was built, but the land was held in a family trust since 1972.
According to the report, the property is part of a “large holding that includes 32 parcels.”
Mayland Farms Ltd., one of the owners, has its business address at 2611 No. 7 Rd., just down the road from the farm whose application will be under consideration for subdivision.
The Food Security and Agricultural Advisory Committee supported the application.
If council decides to support it, it will be forwarded to the Agricultural Land Commission for final approval.
