Children going to the Brighouse library will now get to learn by playing in a brand-new area.
A new Early Literacy Corner designed for children up to six-years-old has been added to the library, according to a Richmond Public Library (RPL) media release.
The corner, which offers "interactive and tactile wall-mounted activities," is designed to offer a "warm and friendly environment" for children to engage in "active and imaginative play." Features include a mirror, magnet, felt boards and other toys that "encourage fine motor skills and dexterity development."
“The new Early Literacy Corner at Brighouse can help make play part of your family’s daily routine,” said Kate Adams, head of children and family services at RPL.
“We are excited to launch this new space to provide not only engaging early learning opportunities, but also a gathering space for young children and their caregivers to enjoy and connect with other families."
According to the media release, play is crucial to child development because it "helps strengthen neural connections" and encourages children to develop "creativity and language skills."
The Early Literacy Corner is located in the children's area on the main floor of Brighouse library. Parents are encouraged to sign children up for their own library cards, which are free to obtain, to get access to all resources, which also include RPL programs.
