It has been almost a year to the day since residents in the Richmond Centre riding elected a new MP – but many of them have still to meet rookie politician Wilson Miao.
The Liberal Member of Parliament ousted long-time Conservative incumbent Alice Wong in last September’s federal election.
But 12 months on, Miao has yet to open a constituency office, much to the frustration of many of his constituents, some of whom reached out to the Richmond News to ask why.
Permit issues and subsequent renovations at a new premises near Richmond Hospital were also cited by Miao’s spokesperson as reasons for the delay, but claimed that he hoped to open it soon.
Asked again on Monday why the office was still not open, a spokesperson for Miao once more blamed renovations and said again it would be “completed soon.”
“…we understand that there are some constituents that tried to visit us. We would like to reassure that our office is set to completion very soon and will allow in-person meetings and services,” the spokesperson added.
“Currently, we are accessible through email and phone during our work hours. If any constituents require any assistance they are welcome to contact us.”
One such resident, Kerry Starchuk, did call Miao’s number, after visiting his yet-to-open office, but was redirected to a different number, which was unsuccessful, before finally getting through on his Ottawa number.
There is also a thread on social media platform Reddit about the difficulty in getting hold of Miao.
The poster on Reddit claimed she needed to speak with him about a passport issue, but had never received a reply to voicemails and emails.
Her experience was echoed by others on the thread, with people suggesting they contact Richmond’s other MP, Parm Bains.
Miao’s contact details for constituents, given to the News in May, are email: [email protected] or call: 604-775-5790.
