The Richmond branch of Oxfam is hosting its annual Walk-a-Thon for its Hunger and Famine Fund.
The event, which raised more than $10,000 last year despite it being virtual due to COVID, will take place on Saturday, June 11.
This year, Oxfam has partnered with other organizations to help the Ukrainian refugees, as well as Hunger and Famine Fund, which helps starving people across Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia.
In those African countries, Oxfam estimates, on average, one person dies every 48 seconds from acute hunger linked to “conflict, COVID 19, the climate crisis and inflationary and market pressures accelerated by the current conflict in Ukraine.”
Oxfam working hard to help stricken people across the world
In the Ukraine - and also Poland, Moldova and Romania - there is a “partner-led humanitarian response aiming to reach 800,00 people and Oxfam itself has reached 225,00 people in Poland with its own work on hand-washing, toilets, showers, clean water and community outreach.
About ninety-five per cent of the people affected, according to Oxfam, are women and children.
