Public washrooms hours in Richmond parks have been extended to 10 p.m. allowing the homeless population to access them given that other public amenities have been shut down due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
Richmond Coun. Carol Day had a motion at council on Monday afternoon asking for port-a-potties and hand-washing stations in city centre. The homeless population normally use washroom facilities in libraries, community centres and fast food restaurants.
But Richmond city staff identified 35 washrooms – three with showers – in parks throughout the city that haven’t been closed and can be used by the homeless population. The closing time previously was 6 p.m.
A map has been made and will be distributed through service providers to let those who need washroom facilities throughout the day know where they are located.
A port-a-potty will be added at the worksyard on Lynas Lane as well.
